If you have total assets below £13,500 your care will be funded by your Local Authority. Between the two thresholds you would receive some state help. Changes to Inheritance Tax thresholds The Inheritance Tax thresholds for the year April 2008-2009 is £312,000. This is referred to as the Nil Rate Band allowance. Each individual has the right to leave the first £312,000 tax free, with any assets over this amount taxable at 40% (with the exception of gifts to spouse/Civil Partner). For further information email info@dovedon.co.uk Pre Budget Report - Major Changes The Governments Pre Budget Report announced some important changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT). Married couples and Civil Partners can now transfer their 1st death Nil Rate Band (NRB) allowance to the survivor negating the need for NRB Discretionary Trust Wills. However, protecting assets from issues such as long term care fees and re-marriages, as well as ensuring your assets are inherited by your chosen beneficiaries, are as prominent as ever. The change to the IHT rules has allowed Dovedon to create a new trust, the Asset Protection Trust. This new product allows clients to protect their assets for their loved ones whilst still benefiting from the tax efficiency created under the new IHT rules. All Dovedon Associates are provided with full training on the above. Lasting Powers of Attorney This week Dovedon welcomes a new product to its portfolio - the Lasting Power of Attorney. This document replaces the Enduring Power of Attorney. It is more complicated and costly to establish but brings many benefits and additional control for the individual creating the document. Our Associates have access to a comprehensive training course, factsheets and our legal team to allow them to familiarise themselves with this change to the Law.
